Salt Pepper Paper Plate Small Bowl Balloon Tablespoon Dry environment |
Procedure
1. Add a tablespoon of salt in the small bowl. 2. Add a tablespoon of pepper in the small bowl. 3. Make sure to mix thoroughly. 4. Pour the mixture of salt and pepper onto the paper plate. 5. Blow up the balloon to whatever size desired. 6. Make sure to be in a dry environment and rub the balloon on your hair. 7. Lower the balloon an inch over the mixture in the plate. 8. Observe what is happening. |
Observation
You should be noticing that the pepper is being picked up by the balloon while some or all of the salt is still in the paper plate. I'm sure you are wondering how the pepper is being picked up. Also you are trying to figure out why the salt isn't being picked up with the pepper. As you move the balloon closer to the mixture you will also tell that some salt is being picked up by the balloon.

When you rubbed the balloon over your hair you caused the balloon to become negatively charged from the negative dry air and your neutral hair . The salt and pepper mixture is positively charged because it doesn't have nothing to get charged by. Since the charges of the mixture and the balloon is different that is why they attract. The negative charge of the balloon allows for the pepper to hop onto it. And the pepper is picked up by the balloon more easily then the salt because it is lighter than the salt.
